KIYODEA
kilwa youth development association
The research centre manager is an experienced eco-builder from
the UK and is now offering workshops in environmental building
with the finished constructions being used by KIYODEA and other
needy causes.

The technology used in Superadobe construction was developed
by Iranian architect Nader Khalili. The technique uses layered
long fabric tubes with a low cement adobe mix to form rings. The
rings taper at the roof apex and the resulting beehive like
structures uses arches, domes, and vaults to create shells that are
cheap, strong and aesthetically pleasing.

Nader Khalili originally developed the Superadobe system in
1984 in response to a NASA call for housing designs for future
human settlements on the Moon and on Mars. His proposal was
to use moon dust to fill the plastic Superadobe tubes and
Velcro together the layers (instead of barbed wire).

Our two week course focuses on the following aspects:

- Choosing a site and site preparation
- Simple solar passive strategies
- Materials & equipment
- Tube, filling, compression and laying
- Inserting windows
- Inserting door frames
- Constructing the arch
- Plastering & finishing
- Bottle walls

Accommodation is provided at Upepo Pwani lodge in a variety of accommodation options from dorms to beach front chalets. All meals and logistics as well as day trips to the UNESCO world heritage site of Kilwa Kisiwani and Lake Maliwe in the Selous Game Reserve buffer zone.

Our course is hard work but the benefit of it over others is that the end result will be put too good use as a hospital toilet, nursery classroom, village meeting point or research centre office, not just sat in a field as another eco-build example.
